Environment
Steps
Requirements:
- GO SAVE: Option 21 (saving the entire system) (Recommended, but not required)
- HMC V10R3M1050
- IBMi QSECOFR level ID and password
- System on Temporary side
- UAK Not Expired before release date of firmware
Pre-readiness check
Check HMC Readiness for Firmware upgrade
From the HMC,
- Select the “System” to upgrade
- Select “Actions”
- Select “Update Firmware”
- Select “Check Readiness”

Status should show as “Ready”
- Resources → All Partitions.
- Select the "Partition" to shut down
- Shutting down one Partition down at a time is recommended.
- Select the “Action” button drop down
- Select “Shutdown Partition”
- Shutdown options, select “Operating System or Operating System Immediate”
- Select "OK”
Confirmation screen will appear, select “Yes” to continue
The partition(s) begin to Shut down.
Note: Wait for all Partitions' State to shows “Not Available or Not Activated” before continuing.
SERVER POWER OFF
- Resources → “All Systems”
- Select the “System” to upgrade
- Select “Connections and operations”
- Select “Power off system”
- Select “Normal power off”
- Select “OK”
Wait for the server to completely power off before continuing.
Disruptive Firmware Update or Upgrade
Let's get started!
From the Systems Screen
- Select the “System” to update/upgrade.
- A menu bar with a list commands will appear.
With Readiness confirmed.
Partitions are shut down
System is powered off
- Select the “System” to upgrade
- Select “Firmware”
- Select “Update System Firmware”

- License Agreement screen will appear.
- Read and select “I accept the terms of this license agreement” to accept the license agreements
- Select “Next“
Verify the Check readiness screen
Select “Next”
Choose source files location screen.
Select the "IBM website"
Select “Next”
Choose firmware type and target level screen

- Updates can either be concurrent or disruptive. (Disruptive updates require a full system restart.)
- This document is only for Disruptive updates and upgrades.
- For Concurrent updates, see document
- Upgrades are always disruptive. (Requiring a full system restart)
- Select Update or Upgrade for Type.
- Select Target FSP\EBMC level
- Select “Next
Accept the confirmation screen and install screen.
Note Updates or Upgrades may take up to 90 minutes to complete.
- Firmware upgrade is complete
Power on server
Select the “System” to upgrade/update
- Resources → “All Systems”
- Select the “System” to upgrade
- Select “Connections and operations”
- Select “Power ON system”
- Select “Normal Power ON"
- Select “OK”
The system begins to power on.
The System Status and Reference Code will show you the server status.
Some codes remain on the screen longer than others. As an example, C1472000.
Wait for System State to show “Operating or Standby”.
Proceed to activate the partitions.
Note: Depending on the Power On values, the partitions may automatically power up when the server powers on.
Activate the Partitions
Select the partition to activate by clicking on the check box of the partition.
Note: Activating one Partition at a time is recommended.
- Select “Operations”
- Select “Activate partition”
- Expand and verify the “Advanced Setting”
- Keylock Position is in “Normal”
- IPL Type should be “B: IPL”
- Select “Finish” to continue
- Expand and verify the “Advanced Setting”
- Once Partition activated is displayed you may close that window.
- Verify Partition Reference code is at 00000000
Activate the remaining partitions.
Verify firmware
On the green screen command line:
- Run DSPFMWSTS
- *Active and *Temp should be on upgraded firmware level
On HMC
- Check the “System” to verify
- Select “Firmware”
- Select “View system firmware levels"
